André-Marie
Single-hopped farmhouse-style ale
Single-hopped farmhouse-style ale
The unit of measurement of electrical current (ampere, often shortened to amp) was named after the French physicist André-Marie Ampère. The saison style of beer has its origins in France and Belgium.
The André-Marie recipe was inspired by Brooklyn Brewery's Sorachi Ace, a delicious commercial beer that also features use of a single hop, the eponymous Sorachi Ace variety.
Hops
André-Marie is hopped exclusively with the Sultana hop variety, with pineapple, pine, and citrus notes. To extract different characteristics from the hops, they were added to the kettle at various points throughout the boil, during cooling after the boil, and finally in the fermentation vessel prior to bottling (i.e., "dry-hopping").
Yeast
The yeast used in fermenting André-Marie is Saisonstein's Monster from Omega Yeast Labs and is a genetic hybrid of a French saison strain and a Belgian saison strain. Omega describes it as "spicy, complex, tart, dry and crisp with some bubblegum character present from its Belgian parent, and more fruit and fewer phenolics than its French parent".
